Self-Massage and MCO (Movement Control Order)

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19, popularly known as coronavirus, as a world pandemic. At this moment, the world seems to be at halt. Many countries have proceeded with travel ban and lockdown. While we in Malaysia are no longer a stranger to this new norm, we understand that many people are feeling the pain and discomfort during the MCO period.

As of now (29/04/2020) , almost 6,000of cases have been recorded with 100 dead in Malaysia, courtesy of COVID-19. Most noteworthy, as a massage therapist, you should be worried for the virus is transmitted through contact and spreads exponentially. Hence, that puts massage therapists at risk of infection since massage is entirely a contact practice. In this article, Kingdom Reflexology is here to advise you to have a self-massage session at home.

The Importance of Self-Massage at This Time

Immobility and a sedentary lifestyle are a danger at any stage of life. Our bodies are made for movement. When we stop moving, we are putting our own health at risk. During the quarantine, we should move as much as possible. This is especially crucial for folks who were undergoing physical therapy.

  1. Keep It Consistent – Take 10 minutes twice a day to have a self massage session. One during the day and another one before bedtime. Remember to not massage yourself with a full stomach.
  2. Do Not Be Too Hard – More pressure on the body muscles is not a solution for removing body stiffness. Going too hard, too fast, can cause the muscle to seize up when what you want it to do is release its tension. Pressure does not equal depth.
  3. Too Eager to Remove the Pain – Do not exert pressure on the body area which already inflamed. The most common mistake a person can make is over massage an already inflamed area. Too much massage and pressure on it can lead to more inflammation and a longer recovery period.
